Brougham Road

We were appointed to extend the existing kitchen to gain the side of the rear garden for increased living and dining space.

This project called for a simple move to take advantage of the neighbouring high boundary, while bringing as much daylight as possible into the new kitchen. Sharp and minimal detailing of the new glazing contrasts with more rustic furniture and fittings.

In addition, this project upgraded and extended the family bathroom at first floor.

A simple sliding door is the threshold between the original house and what is now a grand kitchen space. In what was a rear reception room, our clients chose to create a generous family utility room and loo accessed from the hall. At the front of the house is a private feeling, room for TV, library and kids’ play.

The frames of large glazed sliding doors to the garden are designed in proportion with the original house, and aligned with the new rooflight which folds down to meet it.

A reclaimed timber floor, cast iron radiators, industrial factory lighting and a large antique mirror are juxtaposed with the unashamedly modern details of the new glazing and ceiling structure.

The success of this project is that the crisp new architecture provides a neutral backdrop for the more decorative interior elements, the result is an extraordinary space which feels at once both theatrical and unselfconscious.
